Anyone wanting to investigate further into how thoughts, beliefs, experiences, and core nature have shaped who they seem to be and who they think they are.
Also for those wishing to learn how to facilitate The Five Openings themselves: therapists, school counsellors, parents, etc.
Imagine you are alone in a canoe on a fast and turbulent river. Your focus is directly ahead as you maneuver to avoid obstacles and dangers. You have little time to look around to gain information about the shoreline or what is under the water creating dangerous obstacles.
Now imagine a trusted friend or guide seated with you. They assist in navigation and maneuvering which frees your mind to perceive new elements. They also provide their own perceptions and perspectives of the river and it’s surrounding and even more, they witness you piloting the canoe and can provide important feedback of what they see. As a team you are able to change course on the river, visit different shores, and observe different vistas than you would have if you were alone.
It is a simple and straightforward approach for gazing behind the illusion of the self that can be used alone, with a guide or even in a group. When coupled with an eagerness for growth and for shifting perspectives it can be a powerful healing tool.
No. The Five Openings can also be a useful approach for highlighting strengths, and positive personal experiences. Celebrating our resilient traits is encouraged and utilized within The Five Openings.
A skilled guide’s role in The Five Openings is not simply as a therapist. They are a co-creator of the experience and can receive new perspectives and self-awareness from your journey as well. Drawing from a common humanity and an objective perspective they inhabit their role in an intuitive and compassionate manner. Aligning their skills of observation, communication and discernment with yours transforms a journey into an adventure for both you and your guide.
